Summer Fun In Cloudcroft

When you think of the mountains, you may think of how beautiful the snow looks in winter time, or of the beautiful fall colors. But summer is a wonderful time of year too, especially in Cloudcroft NM! While the desert sun in summer can be sweltering, the mountains are an awesome place to beat the heat.
There’s so much to see and do in summer, from hiking in the National Forest (there are lots of trails to choose from), to watching the local wildlife (which you can do right from the deck while sipping your coffee), to visiting the favorite haunts of the locals. Here are the top ten.
Mad Jack’s Barbecue immediately springs to mind for its delicious food. You just have to get there early, cause it’ll be packed!
If an actual meal isn’t your style, here’s a couple bakeries in town, Kennabelle’s Kreations and the Burro Street Bakery. Both are excellent, Kennabelle’s has incredible cinnamon rolls in particular and Burro Street has chocolate chip cookies bigger than your hand.
If you’re in the mood for pizza, Ski Cloudcroft has delicious wood fired pizzas available from Memorial Day through Labor Day that are absolutely mouth watering. (Keep that in mind in your trip planning!) The Cloudcroft Brewing Company has similarly delicious pizzas and a wide array of alcohol to choose from.
You can go to the Sacramento Mountains Historical Museum and learn about the area’s rich history, or take a trip down to the library in town to peruse its tomes.
There are a couple of thrift shops in town with amazing deals on everything from clothes, to books, to antiques and everything in between.
In June, the hottest month, it may rarely get up to 85 degrees but by July it average 75 to 80 – far better than the 100+ temperatures you will frequently experience in El Paso TX. And when the rains start in July, it can drop into the 50s.
An hour away is Grindstone Lake, where you can go swimming, try your hand at fishing, or simply enjoy the sylvan scene. Nearby is Grindstone Stables, where you can go horseback riding, on a carriage ride, or even a sleigh ride (in winter)
Around 40 minutes away from our cabins is a beautiful waterfall that would be a perfect trip out for the whole family. (Bluff Springs).
We have two rental cabins, a small cabin that sleeps 1 to 2 people (Fawn Passage) and a larger cabin that can sleep up to 8 people but is a favorite of many couples (Cedar Lodge).
